I'm from California and planning is my passion. I just needs tips on how to get started and any great books I should read. Thanks,

That's sort of what I am going for as a career choice, but not quite.

Everything to do with this career is varied. There are lots of options. Do you want to work for yourself? Do you want to work for a large company/organization?

Those are the questions you should ask yourself.

Salary is based off of those questions. You could make all the way from zero dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars, it depends on how you go about things.

I would recommend you get a degree in Hospitality Management, with this degree you can become an event planner/ meeting coordinator at large hotels and for other companies.

This is usually where you would make the bigger salary unless you are hugely successful going into business for yourself.

Either way requires a TON of work and dedication. It's harder than you think.

Good luck!

Start by getting your name out there. Offer to do a few weddings free of charge and intern at a firm who is already established. If you do a good job then you will be reccomended (and have examples of what you can do for other clients) and paying customers will start rolling in. You will also get a true taste of what wedding planning is like….not as glamorous as some people imagine it to be. :)

In the meantime study things like Business and Accounting for the everyday running of your shop and things like Interior Design and Hospitality to improve your skills as a planner.

Most of all though make sure you have a back-up plan for getting money to pay your bills. Wedding planning is stressful especially when you are stuck with a Bridezilla, business is sketchy during the off seasons, and there are SO MANY WOMEN who want to turn professional after doing their own weddings that the sea of applicants is overwhelming so just getting hired is a job in itself.

Definitely get your name and contact info out there. Here at Yahoo they don't allow you to advertise your services, but another site where vendors are welcome to advertise their services is http://bestweddingpros.com they have free business postings and Brides can ask questions of each other and from the vendors. Give it a try.
