The Maid Of Honor escorted by the Best Man enters the stage and the Flower Girl and the Ring Bearer lastly follow them. Finally, the bride and her father walk down the aisle as it’s time for the bride’s father to give away his daughter to the groom. In the absence of the bride’s father or both of her parents either a Godparent or a priestly mentor do the favor of giving away the bride. Finally, the priest helps the couple to exchange the vows and they exchange rings as the marriage is affirmed. The bride and the groom go out and the bride turns back and throws the bouquet in her hand for her friends to receive. Tthe Maid of Honor and the Best Man follow, leaving the church behind the bride and the groom. Then the Bridesmaids and the Groomsmen leave the church followed by the Flower Girl and the Ring Bearer. Finally the guests leave the church. Normally this whole wedding ceremony procedure shouldn’t take more than 15 to 20 minutes as stretching it for a longer period may push the guests to boredom.
The topic of wedding ceremonies remains incomplete without a mention of the grand Indian wedding, which is usually a celebration extending over several days, wherever in India it may be. India being a multi-ethnic nation is home to different castes and communities and the marriage ceremonies in different states vary from each other. If the Bengalis start with the haldi ceremony then the Punjabis and other communities begin with the mehendi ceremony. These morning ceremonies take place separately at the bride’s and the groom’s houses and the mandaps are nicely decorated with a gorgeous canopy and with flowers. The bride and the groom’s body are embrocated with haldi or turmeric paste and sandalwood paste and aromatic oils for a fresh look and a soft skin during the main ceremony. Then there are other morning ceremonies where the bride performs a religious ceremony with her brother where she gives offerings to the gods and the ancestors. The baarat from the bridegroom’s side appears in the evening accompanied by his entire family and his friends and relatives. The bride’s mother and the other female members of her family receive them. The priest commences the Hindu marriages where the specially decorated canopy plays an important role as it signifies the occasion of a gorgeous Hindu wedding. The whole ceremony where the priest chants numerous mantras for almost an hour or more and finally when the marriage is over when the guests congratulate and bless the couple and offer tokens and other gifts. In the Hindu marriage ceremonies kanya daan is an important aspect, which is something, equivalent to its Christian counter part of giving away the daughter.
